Dive Club Meeting - Richard Theiss

Come find out more about the new Marine Protected Areas here in SoCal! Brian Meux from Santa Monica Baykeeper will be joining us to shed some light on the new MPAs. Where are they? Who they benefit and how Santa Monica Baykeeper is helping to keep watch over them.

A little more on Brian........

Before working at Baykeeper, Brian attended U.C. Berkeley where he majored in integrative biology with an emphasis in marine ecology. He earned a Master’s of Science degree in Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona, which aims to find innovative solutions and gives experiential learning related to sustainable development and ecological restoration and design.  His master’s thesis analyzed Santa Monica Baykeeper’s Kelp Restoration and Monitoring Project.  Brian began volunteering for Baykeeper in 2005 and joined the staff in 2007 as Kelp Program Coordinator, working to maximize restoration and monitoring of L.A. County kelp forests, and has personally witnessed acres of kelp forests recover in multiple locations off the Malibu and Palos Verdes coasts.  An ongoing goal is to ensure local SCUBA divers have the opportunity to perform hands-on work making a positive difference for natural communities and marine resources as a whole.  As Marine Programs Manager since 2008, Brian is also involved in outreach and advocacy for improved oil spill prevention and response, science-based marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, abalone recovery, and eelgrass habitat restoration.  He is also participating in aerial boat surveys with the Baykeepers partners at LightHawk to help illuminate fishing types and locations off the southern California shores.

Dive Club Meeting - Richard Theiss

Richard Theiss is a cinematographer, media consultant, and shark advocate whose work has been used by National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Google Earth/Ocean and many others.  He has spent the past seven years filming the white sharks at Isla Guadalupe, more than any other videographer.  He produced the highly regarded documentary, Island of the Great White Shark, and authors a very successful blog: RTSeaBlog – keeping an eye on nature.

Lecture Summary: Diving With Sharks & the Future of Shark Conservation

While you can travel the globe to see sharks in the wild, for U.S. divers there are two locations relatively close that offer some of the best shark diving in the world.  Richard Theiss will introduce you to these locations and recount some of his up-close-and-personal experiences. But while seeing sharks can be exciting, the possible extinction of the species looms as a dark cloud over their future.  Shark conservation has grown and matured over the years and is now at a critical juncture.  Richard will explain where it goes from here and what we as divers can do to further the cause.

Back from Cabo Pulmo

LA Dive and Ride - NewsWe had an incredible time in Cabo Pulmo and we're pretty sure no one in that village will ever forget us.  Our Amigo Lee hooked us up and took great care of us. There is so much  marine life in the park it's mind blowing. Huge schools of grouper, jacks, snapper, tuna, amazing hard corals, whales, turtles, giant eels,  the list goes on and on.  Our Thanksgiving dinner turned into a gianormous feast with great friends who are all part of the LADR family. We even had Captain Ryan from the Humboldt join us with his family. We couldn't have asked for a better time with better people. Hope to see you all for the next trip!

Check out some of the photos from the trip here.
